BAYB Weather, Notification, and Other Policies

2011-04-22

BAYB has Policies in place regarding weather and other park issues. Please see full story for more information.

BAYB takes the safety and welfare of our players, members, staff, and fans seriously. We have policies in place regarding many common issues such as Cold, Heat, Lightning, Rain, etc..

We do follow these policies. Anytime weather conditions dictate a change in schedules, based on these policies, we take the following actions:

1. Update the home page of the Website with a news article.
2. Email our mailing list and all board members.
3. Update the rain out number.
4. Age reps reschedule games.

We try to make decisions by 4pm daily. Our policy, is if by 5pm a decision to delay or cancel games is not made, the decision to play or not becomes the Duty persons call or the umpires call at game time.

Obviously we try to make decisions as early as possible but we do not control the weather. Basically if no change to website or rainout number by 5pm, head to the park at your normal time.

As an example we had rain early and then misty conditions last night. Many  people took it on themselves to assume games were canceled. In reality the fields were in great shape, temperature was within our cold weather policy, the winds were light, and forcast did not call for severe storms. Thus no change to schedule, at 4pm. The decision to play became an individual field condition call after 5pm.   BAYB Duty persons and Umpires checked fields and games were played.

If at anytime field conditions would have deteriorated to a point  of being unsafe to play, umpires would stop the game. Should have weather conditions fell outside our policy limits the BAYB duty person would have stopped games. None of this occurred.

A few teams did not have enough players to play, and forfeits resulted. Those teams are subject to our forfeiture fine rule. This rule exists to reduce the costs of playing baseball (i.e. registration and fundraisers). We had to pay the umpires and field crews full pay, and we do not feel it is fair for all teams to share the costs for one team's inability to show up.

Please sign up for our e-mail list to get the rain out info. You can enter your cell phone e-mail and it will be delivered to you as a text also. Standard text charges apply (note, you will also get things such as this article texted, so maybe not a good idea if you do not have unlimited texting).

Hope this helps all understand we take safety seriously and have policies and procedures in place to keep us all as safe as realistically possible when at a BAYB event.
